An end-of-life nurse has shared a surprising observation from her years of caring for patients in their final days. Katie Duncan, a nurse practitioner and “death care coach” based in Maryland, says she has repeatedly witnessed a similar movement among people nearing the end of life. According to her experience, some patients suddenly lift their arms or reach upward, as if trying to touch or hold something above them. She explained that the motion can appear very deliberate, almost like the person is reaching for someone’s hand or gesturing toward the sky. While the exact reason for this behavior is still unknown, Duncan noted that it is not uncommon for patients to report seeing loved ones, pets, or familiar figures who have already passed away. In some cases, patients even describe these visions out loud, mentioning people they believe are present in the room.
Healthcare professionals often refer to these moments as end-of-life experiences or visions, which can happen in the final days or hours of life. Duncan explained that many patients who experience them seem calm and peaceful rather than distressed, suggesting the moments may bring comfort. Even when patients do not speak about what they are seeing, the reaching movement is sometimes observed as part of this mysterious stage. Families and caregivers who have witnessed similar experiences often describe them as emotional yet meaningful moments. While science cannot fully explain why these actions occur, many healthcare workers view them as a natural part of the body and mind transitioning during the final stages of life. Duncan says that being present during these moments is both humbling and powerful, as it allows caregivers and families to witness a deeply personal part of the human experience.
