I soaked my strawberries in salt water and these white things wriggled out?

Many people have recently noticed a surprising trend online: when fresh strawberries are soaked in salt water, tiny white creatures sometimes appear in the bowl. These small organisms are usually fruit fly larvae rather than actual worms. They are extremely small—typically about 1 to 3 millimeters long—and often remain hidden inside the fruit because their pale color blends into the berry’s soft interior. The larvae develop when certain fruit flies lay eggs just beneath the skin of ripening fruit. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the sugary flesh while growing. A common species linked to this is the spotted wing drosophila, a tiny fruit fly known for laying eggs in healthy fruit still on the plant. Unlike many other fruit flies that prefer overripe produce, this insect can pierce the skin of firm berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and cherries. Warm weather and humid conditions help the insects reproduce quickly, which is why this phenomenon can occur during peak growing seasons.

The popular “salt water test” works because of a natural process called osmosis. When strawberries are placed in salt water, the change in the surrounding environment can cause the larvae to move out of the fruit and into the water, making them visible. Although the sight can be unpleasant, experts generally say these larvae are not considered harmful to humans if accidentally consumed. Fresh produce grown outdoors naturally comes into contact with insects, and small traces can occasionally be present. However, if berries show clear signs of spoilage—such as mold, a sour smell, leaking juice, or a mushy texture—it is best to discard them. To prepare strawberries safely, simple cleaning methods can help. Rinsing them under cold running water removes dirt and surface debris, while soaking them briefly in a mixture of vinegar and water can reduce bacteria. A salt water soak may also help reveal hidden larvae before rinsing the fruit thoroughly. With proper washing and inspection, strawberries can still be enjoyed as a fresh and nutritious snack.
