Creamy Vintage Vanilla Custard

Classic Vanilla Baked Custard is a timeless dessert known for its smooth texture and comforting flavor. Made with simple ingredients such as milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla, this traditional treat highlights how basic pantry staples can create something truly special. The custard’s creamy consistency comes from gentle baking in a water bath, also called a bain-marie, which helps the mixture cook evenly without curdling. A light sprinkle of nutmeg on top adds warmth and a delicate aroma that pairs beautifully with the sweet vanilla flavor. This dessert has long been a favorite in many households because it is both elegant and easy to prepare. Whether served warm on a cozy evening or chilled for a refreshing finish to a meal, baked custard offers a soft, silky texture that feels comforting and satisfying.

To prepare this dessert, begin by preheating the oven to 325°F (160°C) and lightly greasing six small ramekins with butter before placing them in a deep baking dish. In a bowl, whisk four eggs until smooth, then gently mix in three-quarters of a cup of sugar, half a teaspoon of salt, and one tablespoon of vanilla extract. Warm three cups of milk until it is hot but not boiling, then slowly pour it into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to prevent the eggs from cooking too quickly. Once combined, pour the custard mixture into the ramekins and lightly dust the tops with ground nutmeg. Carefully add hot water to the baking dish until it reaches about halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the edges are firm and the center has a slight jiggle. Let the custards cool for about 20 minutes before serving, or refrigerate for a firmer texture.
