My ”Control Freak” MIL Runs Our Marriage, and My Husband Lets Her

My husband and I are 24 and recently married. His mother offered to buy us an apartment, but I declined because I sensed her intentions weren’t entirely generous. My husband told me to stop being ungrateful, but things escalated when I came home early one day and found her there, uninvited. To my shock, she had completely changed our bedroom—replacing our bedsheets with ones I hate, getting rid of a sentimental mirror from my grandmother, and even throwing away most of my personal items, all without asking. Her excuse? They didn’t “fit” her standards.

It’s clear she wants control over our lives, and offering to buy us a home is just another way to tighten her grip. The worst part is, my husband doesn’t see the damage this is doing to our relationship—he won’t stand up to her, and I feel completely disrespected and unheard. I’m at a loss about how to move forward when the person I married won’t protect our space or support me.
