Woman throws herself through window and gunman is shot dead by SWAT during hostage situation near Baltimore synagogue

Authorities in Baltimore responded to a tense hostage situation Tuesday afternoon near the Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue after a reported burglary at a residence on Park Heights Avenue. According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, officers arrived shortly after 12:30 p.m. and discovered that a woman inside the home was being held at gunpoint. During the confrontation, another woman managed to escape by jumping through a window, prompting an urgent response from law enforcement. As officers attempted to secure the area, the suspect reportedly opened fire from inside the residence. Audio from police communications indicated that officers were taking fire while trying to approach the house, forcing them to seek cover behind nearby vehicles. One officer was struck in the leg during the exchange and was quickly transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment.

The situation ended when a SWAT officer fatally shot the gunman, who police said was related to individuals living in the home. Authorities confirmed that the incident occurred near the synagogue but was not connected to the place of worship itself, despite early concerns from the community. Emergency crews and multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, and the surrounding area was temporarily closed while investigators worked to secure the location. Local officials expressed relief that no additional injuries were reported among residents in the neighborhood. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott thanked first responders for their quick actions and extended support to those affected, including the injured officer and the families involved. Officials continue to review the events leading up to the incident as the investigation remains ongoing, while community leaders emphasize the importance of safety and support for those who witnessed the frightening situation.
