Married at First Sight expert Mel Schilling has died at age 54 after a long cancer battle, according to a statement shared by her family on March 24, 2026. In the tribute, her husband Gareth said she passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, and remembered her as a devoted mother, partner, and source of courage through two years of treatment. Schilling first revealed in December 2023 that she had colon cancer after doctors found a tumor during a scan. Although it was removed and she was initially given the all clear, she later shared that the disease had spread to her lungs and then to her brain. Earlier this month, she told followers that after radiotherapy, her medical team had said there was nothing more they could do. She also urged people to listen to their bodies and seek medical advice when something feels wrong.
Before her death, Schilling spoke openly about two symptoms that stood out to her as the cancer spread: blinding headaches and numbness down her right side. Those symptoms can have many causes, but official NHS guidance says malignant brain tumors may cause new or worsening headaches and, depending on the tumor’s location, weakness or problems affecting one side of the body. The NHS also notes that bowel cancer symptoms can include changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, bloating, and unexplained weight loss. Schilling’s message was ultimately one of awareness as much as heartbreak: she wanted others not to dismiss unusual changes in their health. Her final public reflections, and her family’s moving tribute, have left many people remembering not only her television career, but also her honesty, resilience, and compassion in the face of a devastating illness.
