Ann Blyth, Golden Age of Hollywood star, dies at 98

Hollywood is mourning the passing of one of its final Golden Age stars, as Academy Award-nominated actress Ann Blyth has died at the age of 98. Known worldwide for her unforgettable performance as Veda Pierce in the 1945 classic Mildred Pierce, Blyth passed away on June 25 from natural causes, just weeks before her 99th birthday. Her family remembered her as a talented artist, a devoted mother, and a kind-hearted person who loved gardening, knitting, and oil painting. She was also known for personally responding to fan letters throughout her life, showing the deep appreciation she had for the audiences who supported her career. Blyth shared decades of marriage with Dr. James McNulty, and together they built a family that included five children, ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Born in Mount Kisco, New York, in 1928, Blyth began performing at a young age through radio and theater before making her way into Hollywood during the 1940s. Her talent quickly made her a standout performer, leading to memorable roles in films such as The Great Caruso, Brute Force, and Rose Marie, where she showcased both her dramatic ability and singing skills. However, her defining role came when she was only 16 years old, portraying the ambitious and cruel Veda Pierce opposite Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination and secured her place in Hollywood history. Although she later stepped away from major film roles, she continued appearing on television and stage, including roles in The Twilight Zone and Murder, She Wrote. With her passing, Hollywood loses another treasured connection to its classic era, leaving behind a legacy that will continue through generations of film lovers.
