Supergirl actor defends actress Milly Alcock over trolls as movie bombs in box office

The new Supergirl movie has had a difficult launch, earning just $38 million domestically and $68 million worldwide during its opening weekend against a reported $170 million production budget. Starring Milly Alcock, best known for House of the Dragon, the film has received mixed reviews from critics, with many questioning whether it can recover financially. However, much of the online conversation has shifted away from the movie itself and toward the actress, who has become the target of harsh criticism and personal attacks on social media. Former Supergirl television actor Rahul Kohli, who portrayed Jack Spheer (Biomax) in the TV series, strongly condemned the online abuse, calling out adults who use their large platforms to bully a young actress for playing a comic book character. In a passionate Instagram post, Kohli described the behavior as “pathetic,” arguing that attacking performers over fictional roles is both unnecessary and cruel. Many fans supported his comments, emphasizing that even if viewers disliked the film, there is never justification for directing personal abuse at actors who simply brought a character to life.

Before the film’s release, Alcock openly admitted that accepting the role of Kara Zor-El was intimidating because of the enormous expectations attached to such an iconic superhero. She revealed that she nearly turned down the opportunity before encouraging herself to embrace the challenge, believing that fear was a reason to move forward rather than step away. The actress has also spoken candidly about the emotional impact of online criticism, explaining that negative comments can reinforce personal insecurities, which is why she now tries to limit her time on social media. Despite the disappointing box office performance, DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran stressed that Supergirl is only one part of the company’s long-term strategy and said the studio remains confident about the future of its cinematic universe. While audiences remain divided over the film, many viewers have praised Alcock’s performance, arguing that her portrayal of Kara Zor-El was one of the movie’s strongest elements. The ongoing discussion highlights the growing conversation about separating criticism of a film from personal attacks on the actors involved.
