Aryna Sabalenka pleads with Wimbledon to end 149-year-old policy

Serena Williams made an emotional return to Wimbledon, delighting fans with her first singles appearance at the tournament since 2022. The seven-time champion received a standing ovation as she stepped onto Centre Court to face Australian rising star Maya Joint, with family members cheering from the players’ box, including her husband Alexis Ohanian, eldest daughter Olympia, and sister Venus Williams, who is set to partner her in doubles. However, one important family member was missing from the stands. Williams’ two-year-old daughter, Adira River, was unable to watch because of Wimbledon’s strict age policy, which prohibits children under five from entering the show courts. Serena has previously shared that one of her biggest motivations for returning to professional tennis was to let her daughters witness her compete and inspire them to chase their own dreams. While eight-year-old Olympia proudly watched her mother in action, Adira had to leave before the match began. The rule has affected several high-profile families over the years, including Andy Murray, whose younger children missed his farewell doubles match, and even Prince Louis, who was unable to attend Wimbledon despite wanting to join his siblings.

Although Williams ultimately lost a hard-fought first-round match to Maya Joint, her comeback remained one of the tournament’s biggest talking points. The tennis legend recently opened up about the physical and emotional challenges she faced after welcoming her second daughter, revealing that despite intense training and a healthy lifestyle, she struggled to lose weight and regain her fitness. She explained that using weight-loss medication helped her feel healthier, lighter, and more energetic, allowing her to prepare for a return to elite competition. Wimbledon is also known for its many unique traditions and strict regulations, including an 11 p.m. curfew, a 25-second serve clock, limited bathroom breaks, mandatory all-white clothing, and hefty fines for poor sportsmanship or racket smashing. Even the grass is cut to exactly 8 millimeters, while tennis balls are stored at a constant 20 degrees Celsius to ensure consistent bounce. Despite the defeat, Serena’s return reminded fans why she remains one of the sport’s greatest icons, with many eagerly anticipating her upcoming doubles appearance alongside Venus.
