People are calling out Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson over his political stance

Actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson has sparked debate after announcing that he no longer plans to speak publicly about politics. In a recent interview, Johnson explained that he wants to keep his political beliefs private because public political discussions often create division and distract from the work he values most—storytelling and filmmaking. Having previously endorsed Joe Biden during the 2020 U.S. presidential election, Johnson said the backlash and polarization that followed made him rethink the role celebrities should play in politics. He described today’s political climate as hostile and exhausting, adding that he would rather see people with opposing views have respectful, private conversations than trade public insults. Although he no longer intends to endorse political candidates, Johnson stressed that he still votes and believes his choices should remain “between me and the ballot box.” He has also continued speaking out on major national issues, including condemning the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, saying political violence has no place in society regardless of personal beliefs.

Johnson’s comments quickly divided both celebrities and the public. Actor Wil Wheaton criticized the decision, calling Johnson a “coward” and arguing that influential public figures have a responsibility to speak out on important political issues. Fellow actor George Takei also suggested that remaining silent on politics can amount to complicity. However, many social media users defended Johnson’s stance, arguing that celebrities should not be expected to share or promote their political views. Supporters praised his decision to focus on entertainment rather than partisan debates, with some saying that keeping political opinions private could help reduce unnecessary conflict. Others maintained that public figures with large platforms have a unique opportunity to influence important conversations and should continue using their voices on issues that affect society. Johnson’s decision has reignited a broader discussion about whether celebrities have a moral obligation to engage in politics or whether choosing neutrality and privacy is a personal right that should be respected.
