Tim Curry’s Memoir Revealed the Two Women He Could Never Forget — and the Loss That Left Him “Untethered”

Behind Tim Curry’s unforgettable characters was a deeply private man who carried family memories with him throughout his life. In his 2025 memoir Vagabond, Curry opened up about the two women who shaped his emotional world: his mother, Patricia, and his older sister, Judith “Judy” Curry. His childhood was marked by constant moves because of his father’s Royal Navy career, but everything changed when his father suffered a stroke and died in 1958. Curry was only 10. His mother lived until 1999, passing away from melanoma at 80, and Curry later reflected on the complicated relationship they shared. Although Patricia could be difficult and emotionally distant, he still tried to care for her during her final months. After her death, Curry and Judy traveled together and found comfort in their shared history. Their relationship had not always been easy, but over time they had grown extremely close.

Just two years after their mother’s death, Curry suffered another devastating loss when Judy died from a brain tumor at 60. He described her as his “lifeline” to his childhood and family roots, admitting that her death left him “shattered” and “untethered.” Even more than two decades later, he wrote that he still spoke to his sister in his thoughts and longed to laugh with her again. Curry’s own life changed dramatically after suffering a major stroke in 2012, forcing him to relearn how to speak and undergo extensive rehabilitation. Yet he continued working and remained grateful for the people around him. Known for roles in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, It, Clue, and many other productions, Curry built a remarkable career while keeping much of his personal life private. His memoir offered a rare glimpse behind the performances, revealing a man who never stopped missing the people who connected him to his earliest years.
