Nashville International Airport is moving forward with plans to honor Dolly Parton by potentially renaming the major Tennessee travel hub after the country music legend. Governor Bill Lee and the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority announced their support after a grassroots petition reportedly collected more than 150,000 signatures in just days. Lee said he consulted with Parton’s representatives before the announcement and described her life as deeply connected to Tennessee’s identity. Airport officials also said the tribute would reflect Nashville’s reputation for music, hospitality, and welcoming visitors from around the world.

The airport is currently known by the code BNA, which traces back to Berry Field and Col. Harry S. Berry, who helped oversee its construction in the 1930s. Airport CEO Doug Kreulen said Parton’s legacy of kindness, dignity, and opportunity fits closely with the airport’s mission to treat every traveler with respect, regardless of background or circumstances. The proposal is not yet final and is expected to be formally presented to the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority Board of Commissioners on September 17, 2026. At that meeting, officials are expected to review naming guidelines and determine the next steps toward making the tribute official.
