Dolly Parton’s Music Is Surging After Her Death — One Major Milestone Could Be Closer Than Ever

Dolly Parton’s music is experiencing a remarkable resurgence just days after the beloved country legend died at 80. Following her death on August 25, fans around the world have returned to the songs that defined her extraordinary career, sending several of her recordings climbing the UK charts. Her classic hit “9 to 5,” which originally reached only No. 47 in 1981, has now surged to No. 12, putting it within reach of the Top 10. Even more striking, “Jolene” has climbed to No. 2, while her recording with Kenny Rogers, “Islands in the Stream,” has reached No. 6. Dolly is also making history on the UK Official Album Downloads chart, where her 2007 collection The Very Best of Dolly Parton has reached No. 1. For an artist whose career spanned generations, the posthumous chart revival is another reminder of how deeply her music continues to connect with listeners.

The renewed attention has also brought emotional memories of Dolly’s final public moments back into focus. Days before her death, she had been scheduled to appear at Dollywood for the opening of the NightFlight Expedition ride, but doctors advised her not to travel because she was dealing with health issues. In a recorded message, Dolly spoke with her familiar humor, explaining that her Nashville doctor had “clipped my wings” and told her to stay home. She died 11 days later. Meanwhile, another story has touched fans: Eminem recently shared a personal note Dolly sent him after their 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions. Although the two never met, Dolly praised his talent and encouraged him to keep doing what he was doing. Eminem said her words had a lasting impact on him. Now, as her songs rise again and memories continue to surface, Dolly’s legacy appears to be reaching a new generation in a way she could never have predicted.
