The latest controversy began when Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared a photo of a teenage Canadian cadet receiving a medal at a training center in British Columbia, adding the words “This is real.” The post was widely interpreted as a jab at Canada, adding fuel to an already heated political and trade dispute. Other Trump officials have also made provocative comments about Canada’s military and economy. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy questioned Canada’s military strength, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mocked the idea of a serious military confrontation between the two countries. “When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough, and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions,” Carney said.
