Mark Carney Fires Back at Trump Officials — A Teenage Cadet Post Adds New Tension to the U.S.-Canada Dispute

The relationship between the United States and Canada has taken another tense turn after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized senior Trump administration officials over their recent comments about Canada. The latest controversy began when Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared a photo of a teenage Canadian cadet receiving a medal at a training center in British Columbia, adding the words “This is real.” The post was widely interpreted as a jab at Canada, adding fuel to an already heated political and trade dispute. Other Trump officials have also made provocative comments about Canada’s military and economy. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy questioned Canada’s military strength, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mocked the idea of a serious military confrontation between the two countries. The remarks drew a sharp response from Carney, who argued that American officials should focus on negotiations instead of public insults and social-media posts.

“When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough, and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions,” Carney said. The dispute comes as Washington and Ottawa remain locked in a broader trade battle. After negotiations broke down in August, President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, prompting Canada to announce matching measures of its own. Trump has also used provocative language when referring to Canada, including calling Lake Ontario “Lake America.” Carney has warned that prolonged economic pressure could put Canadian industries at risk and make the country increasingly dependent on the U.S. For now, both governments remain far apart, and the growing exchange of political jabs suggests the trade dispute may become even more difficult to resolve.
