In 1996, Christa Pike was just 20 years old when a Tennessee judge sentenced her to death for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Pike had met Tadaryl Shipp at a Job Corps program in Knoxville, and the case quickly became a defining moment in her young life. Her childhood had been marked by instability, neglect and serious trauma, details her legal team later argued were not fully presented during her original sentencing. After receiving the death sentence, Pike was taken to death row, where she would spend nearly three decades while continuing to challenge her punishment.
