Ed Sheeran’s North American tour has faced another unexpected change after support acts Finneas and Aaron Rowe announced they would no longer participate in the remaining dates. Their decisions came one day after Macklemore was removed from the lineup following comments he made in support of Palestine during a September 4 performance at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. Rowe said he was stepping away because he felt he could not continue performing while remaining silent about the situation in Palestine. In a statement, the Irish musician referenced Ireland’s history and said he wanted to remain consistent with his personal beliefs. Finneas also confirmed his withdrawal on Instagram, writing that artists should be able to speak about people they believe are being oppressed and stating his support for Palestine. Their announcements quickly added another layer to a developing situation surrounding Sheeran’s tour.

Sheeran has said that Macklemore’s removal was not his decision. According to a statement from the singer, venues scheduled to host upcoming shows told the touring team that they would withdraw the shows if Macklemore remained part of the lineup. Sheeran said he spent much of the week speaking with venues, promoters and activists in an effort to find a solution, but ultimately the venues and promoter made the final decision. He also explained that Macklemore’s contract was directly with the promoter rather than with him. Sheeran said he wanted to protect fans who had already made plans while also considering the touring crew and other musicians whose livelihoods depend on the shows. With Finneas and Rowe now also departing, attention has turned to how the remaining tour dates will be affected.
