Roger Waters Speaks Out on Ed Sheeran and Macklemore Dispute — His Message Adds Another Twist to the Tour Controversy

Roger Waters has entered the growing dispute surrounding Ed Sheeran and Macklemore after Sheeran explained why Macklemore was removed from the remaining dates of his U.S. tour. Macklemore had spoken publicly in support of Palestinians during a September 4 performance at MetLife Stadium, after which several venues reportedly objected to his continued participation. Sheeran said the decision ultimately came from promoters and venues rather than him, explaining that he had tried to find a solution while also considering fans, crew members and other musicians whose livelihoods depend on the tour. Sheeran also said he has personal views about the conflict but chooses not to share them publicly, describing his concerts as spaces where people from different backgrounds can come together. His statement drew criticism from several public figures, including Ms Rachel and comedian Hannah Einbinder, while other musicians expressed support for Macklemore.

On September 16, Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters added his own response in a social media video. Waters, who has spoken publicly about Palestine for years, criticized Sheeran’s decision and contrasted his approach with Macklemore’s public activism. His remarks were delivered in strongly worded language, but the wider dispute centers on different views about how musicians should use their platforms when addressing international conflicts. Robert Kraft, whose company owns Gillette Stadium, also commented on Macklemore’s removal, saying the venue would not provide a platform for what he characterized as hate speech, while also acknowledging the suffering caused by the conflict. Meanwhile, organizations and musicians have publicly supported Macklemore’s position. The controversy has now spread beyond the original tour decision, with artists and public figures continuing to debate whether entertainers should speak openly about political and humanitarian issues or keep their performances focused on music.
