A poaching attempt in South Africa’s Kruger National Park ended in tragedy after two men reportedly entered the protected area carrying a rifle and an axe while searching for white rhinos. According to reports, the men were hoping to profit from rhino horn, which can command a high price on illegal markets. They were apparently unaware that a herd of elephants was nearby beneath the trees, seeking shelter from the heat. When the elephants noticed the men, both suspects reportedly ran in different directions. One of them, who had been preparing to take aim at a rhino, was unable to escape quickly enough and was trampled by the herd. Rangers were later alerted after the surviving suspect returned home and reported that his accomplice was missing.

South African National Parks spokesperson JP Louw said rangers followed information about the incident and eventually reached the area after a lengthy search. The surviving suspect was arrested and reportedly led authorities back to the location, where the deceased man was found. Officials said the incident began when the two men illegally entered the park through the Pafuri area with the intention of hunting. Kruger National Park is home to a significant population of white rhinos, making conservation efforts especially important. Rhino horns are made of keratin, the same substance found in human hair and fingernails, but illegal demand has made them a valuable target for poachers. The case remains under investigation, while the surviving suspect awaits legal proceedings. For park rangers, the incident highlights the continuing challenges of protecting wildlife across the enormous reserve.
