When I was eleven, my father made a choice that changed my younger brother Jamie’s life and mine forever. Our mother had died two years earlier, and Jamie was only five, still sleeping with the hallway light on because he was afraid Mom might come home and not know where he was. Then Dad’s new girlfriend, Claire, moved in, and it became clear that she did not want children around. One night, I heard her tell Dad that he had to choose between her and us. We moved between homes, learning not to expect promises to last. When I turned eighteen, I became Jamie’s guardian, working two jobs while studying and making sure he had what he needed. He looked older and worn down, explaining that his relationship with Claire had ended and that he had lost his home and savings. I agreed to help, but only on one condition: he had to do exactly what I asked. I took him to our former neighbor, Mrs. Parker, who had cared for us when we were children. She showed us an old box containing Jamie’s childhood belongings and letters she had written to Dad years earlier. She said she had tried to reach him, but he never answered. Dad finally admitted that he had chosen Claire. Later, I helped him with food, clothes, transportation, and a temporary place to stay, but I would not ask Jamie to share his home with someone he did not trust. Eventually, Dad found a maintenance job and asked whether he could attend one of Jamie’s baseball games. Jamie agreed. Dad sat several rows away and simply watched. Afterward, Jamie tossed him the game ball and finally told him, “Shortstop.
