Daniel thought losing his restaurant job would be the worst consequence of leaving his shift to rescue people trapped in a burning apartment building. His manager, Greg, had warned him that walking out during service meant immediate dismissal, but when Daniel heard that a child was still inside, he ignored the threat and ran across the street. He offered Daniel a full-time position with better tips and benefits, explaining that restaurant skills could be taught, but genuine compassion was harder to find. Daniel eventually caught up on the family’s rent, and Greg was removed from management. Later, Greg personally apologized, admitting that he’d focused on lost business instead of the lives at risk.
