Melissa McCarthy has opened up about the decades-old JonBenét Ramsey case while preparing to portray her mother, Patsy Ramsey, in Netflix’s upcoming drama The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. The actress said she spent considerable time studying the case, including police and coroner reports, before developing her own personal interpretation of what may have happened. McCarthy emphasized that she was not claiming to know who killed JonBenét, but said her instinct was that no member of the Ramsey family was responsible. She acknowledged that she might not have the authority to make such a statement, but explained that she needed to form an internal understanding of the case to portray Patsy. McCarthy also described the series as more of a character study than a traditional murder mystery, focusing on the people involved and the emotional impact of the tragedy. She said she feels deep compassion for Patsy and the Ramsey family, who have lived with the case for decades. Patsy died from ovarian cancer in 2006.

JonBenét was found dead in the basement of her family’s Boulder, Colorado, home in December 1996, when she was just six years old. She had suffered severe injuries, and a ransom note demanding $118,000 was discovered inside the house. Her death was ruled a homicide, but no one has ever been charged. John Ramsey has continued to discuss possible explanations for his daughter’s killing. In 2024, he pointed to a separate attack involving a 12-year-old Boulder girl that occurred months after JonBenét’s death, suggesting the same intruder could potentially have been responsible. He said police dismissed the possibility that the incidents were connected. Boulder authorities continue to treat the case as an active homicide investigation, nearly 30 years after JonBenét’s death.
