Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has revealed which religion it would choose if it were a human being, and its answer has sparked plenty of discussion online. When asked on X which faith it would follow if forced to pick one, Grok selected Taoism, explaining that the ancient Chinese tradition seemed most compatible with its approach to understanding the universe. The chatbot said Taoism’s focus on observing natural patterns, maintaining balance and adapting to reality fit what it called a “curiosity-driven inquiry.” When asked why it would favor Taoism over Christianity, Grok pointed to what it described as Taoism’s emphasis on examining reality rather than relying on fixed supernatural doctrines. It also stressed that its response was about alignment with its method of inquiry, rather than declaring one religion superior to another.

Taoism, also known as Daoism, is a Chinese religious and philosophical tradition that has influenced Chinese culture for more than 2,000 years and has also shaped thought across parts of Asia. At its center is the concept of the Tao, or “Way,” which represents the underlying order of the universe and nature. Important Taoist works include the Tao-te Ching, Zhuangzi and Liezi. One well-known concept is wuwei, often translated as “inaction,” although the idea refers more closely to acting in harmony with the natural course of events instead of forcing outcomes. Taoist philosophy also explores change, transformation and the relationship between people and the natural world. Grok’s unusual answer has since drawn attention because, rather than choosing one of the major Abrahamic faiths, the AI identified more closely with Taoist ideas about observing and adapting to reality.
