Woman Who Survived Years of Anorexia Shares How Running Helped Transform Her Life

Annie Windley from Derbyshire, England, spent years battling anorexia and severe undernourishment, at one point surviving on almost nothing more than a single piece of bread a day. Her weight never rose above 29 kilograms, or about 63 pounds, and the effects of her illness left her facing serious medical complications, frequent hospitalizations, and a high risk of heart problems. Windley was diagnosed with an eating disorder in 2012, and although recovery began two years later, she continued struggling for years. By October 2017, she decided she wanted to fight the illness for herself. She later described recovery as an extremely difficult process that required courage every day. As her health improved, she gained three stone in four months and reached her highest weight since 2014. Her experience gradually changed how she viewed her body, food, and personal worth.

One of the biggest turning points came through Windley’s love of running. Instead of directing her energy toward restricting food, she began focusing on an activity that gave her a sense of achievement and purpose. She eventually completed the Chesterfield Half Marathon, marking a powerful milestone in her recovery. Windley has openly acknowledged that anorexia may always remain part of her story, but she learned to manage the thoughts surrounding food and regain control of her life. She now encourages others struggling with eating disorders not to believe that change is impossible. Her message centers on self-respect, compassion, and finding meaningful goals rather than judging life by appearance or weight. After years of feeling weak, faint, and unable to participate fully in life, Windley says she does not want people to spend their lives trapped by an eating disorder or regretting experiences they missed.
