Dean Cain became a familiar face through his acting career, particularly after starring as Superman in the 1993 series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Yet behind his successful career, Cain has always placed another role above everything else: being a father. Born Dean George Tanaka in Michigan in 1966, he was raised by his mother and adoptive father, director Christopher Cain, after his biological father left the family when he was young. Cain later took his adoptive father’s surname and grew up without a relationship with his biological father. In June 2000, Cain welcomed his son Christopher with former model Samantha Torres. After their relationship ended, the two became involved in a custody dispute, but Cain continued fighting to remain a major part of his son’s life. In 2011, he was awarded sole custody. From then on, Cain embraced fatherhood wholeheartedly, preparing his son’s meals, attending his activities and making sure he was present for important moments.

For Cain, being an involved father sometimes required difficult choices. Although he worked as an actor, writer, producer, director, talk-show host and political analyst, he repeatedly prioritized Christopher’s needs over professional opportunities. He attended his son’s football games and jujitsu tournaments and even turned down acting roles while Christopher was growing up. Cain later explained that he considered himself a very present father and believed he was blessed to have the ability to put parenting first. He eventually returned to leading acting roles after Christopher graduated from high school at 18. The father and son have continued sharing trips and memorable experiences, including a visit to Princeton, where Cain showed Christopher his alma mater. Cain has also welcomed Christopher’s younger half-siblings into their family life, describing their home as anything but broken. For him, the greatest reward is simply spending time with his son, reflecting the close bond they built through years of love, attention and sacrifice.
