More than 20 years ago, Patti White received a phone call from her daughter Lisa that left her stunned: she was going to become a grandmother. Lisa, who has Down syndrome, was 29, lived independently in her own apartment and worked full time at a local Goodwill store. She had also built a relationship with a man who, like her, had Down syndrome. Although people around them had long believed that men with Down syndrome were unlikely to father children, Lisa’s pregnancy proved otherwise. Patti admitted that her first reaction was filled with questions and surprise, but she quickly chose to stand beside her daughter. Lisa continued working during her pregnancy, attended childbirth classes and received support from a pregnancy coach. Her pregnancy was considered high-risk, and she eventually gave birth to her son, Nic, four weeks early.

Nic was also born with Down syndrome, and his parents initially tried living together around the time of his birth. Sadly, the relationship did not last, and Nic’s father died when the boy was only five. Lisa and Patti then raised Nic together, determined to give him a loving and supportive childhood despite the criticism they had faced. Some people questioned whether Lisa could be a good mother, while others treated her decision to have a child as irresponsible. Lisa even lost contact with some friends because their parents feared she would influence their daughters to become mothers. Yet Nic continued to grow, learn and thrive. By adulthood, he had graduated from college and openly expressed his gratitude for the two women who raised him. He described having “two moms” and spoke warmly about Lisa’s love and devotion. Patti later shared a photo of Lisa and Nic celebrating important milestones, reflecting on the decades they had spent together. Their story ultimately became a powerful example of how a family can overcome doubt, loss and outside judgment through love, determination and unwavering support.
