Long before Joe Cocker became known around the world for his rough, soulful voice, he was a working-class boy growing up in Sheffield, England, surrounded by factory smoke and soot. Born John Robert Cocker during World War II, he left school at 16 and trained as a gas fitter, but music remained his real passion. He spent his nights performing in small local venues while working during the day, often playing for crowds that barely noticed him. His first major recording opportunity came in 1964, when he recorded a Beatles song for Decca and received only about $1.50 for the session. The record failed, but Cocker refused to abandon his dream. Four years later, his version of “With a Little Help from My Friends” transformed his career, eventually reaching No. 1 in the UK and launching him toward international fame.

Then came Woodstock in 1969, where Cocker delivered a raw, unforgettable performance that helped turn him into a global star. His intense touring schedule soon became difficult to control, however, as alcohol, cocaine and heroin became part of his life. His struggles eventually led to arrests, health problems and performances where he could barely remain onstage. Even after reaching another major milestone with “You Are So Beautiful,” his personal battles continued. His life began changing after he met Pam Baker, whom he later married in 1987, and she became an important source of stability as he rebuilt his life and career. Cocker eventually enjoyed another enormous success with “Up Where We Belong,” his Grammy-winning duet with Jennifer Warnes from An Officer and a Gentleman. He continued recording and touring for decades, releasing albums and performing around the world while maintaining a connection to his Sheffield roots. He died from lung cancer in Colorado on December 22, 2014, aged 70, after years of heavy smoking.
