John Goodman’s dramatically slimmer appearance became a major talking point when the actor attended the Los Angeles premiere of Digger with his wife, Anna Beth Goodman, on September 28, 2026. The 74-year-old star, who plays the U.S. president in the Tom Cruise-led satire, appeared in a classic black suit, striped white shirt and dark tie, while Anna Beth wore a flowing plum-colored dress. The couple posed together on the red carpet, but photographs of Goodman alone highlighted just how much his appearance has changed over the years. His transformation began more than a decade ago. In 2010, Goodman revealed that he had lost more than 100 pounds after giving up alcohol, reducing sugar and exercising regularly. He later explained that previous attempts to lose weight had often ended when he returned to old habits. This time, he focused on making slower, more sustainable changes and staying active. By 2023, Goodman said he had lost around 200 pounds and had taken up boxing to maintain his fitness.

The actor has also spoken openly about sobriety and the emotional habits that once contributed to his struggles with food and alcohol. In a 2018 interview, he reflected on learning to recognize feelings of emptiness rather than trying to fill them with another drink or meal. His latest appearance sparked mixed reactions online, with some fans praising his healthier-looking transformation while others said he appeared too thin or difficult to recognize. Some commenters also focused on his facial expressions, though such reactions were largely based on photographs and personal speculation. Despite the attention, Goodman has emphasized that his journey is about more than appearance. Looking back on his life, he has said that growing older taught him to appreciate things he once overlooked. His latest red-carpet appearance with Anna Beth offered another visible chapter in a transformation he has spent years discussing publicly.
