A 21-year-old University of Georgia student is recovering in intensive care after falling from an eighth-floor apartment window in Athens on September 26. Kristin Sargent was reportedly dancing on a couch or air mattress inside the Rambler Athens complex when she suddenly went through the window and fell toward the pool area below. Emergency crews found her on the ground, where investigators believe she may have struck a metal bench during the fall. A cushion on the bench reportedly had blood on it, while part of the armrest was broken. The frightening incident prompted several emergency calls, including one from a friend who had been with Kristin moments earlier. According to the 911 call, the friend told dispatchers, “We were dancing, and she just fell out of the window. She’s not moving.” She also explained that they had been drinking but said it was “nothing extreme” and that everyone had remained conscious.
Despite the severity of the fall, Kristin has survived and is reportedly awake and able to speak. Her father, Richard Sargent, told local media that his daughter suffered multiple injuries but has shown remarkable strength during her recovery. He described her as a fighter and expressed confidence that she would eventually pull through. Kristin herself reportedly told a friend, “Hey, I’m alive. I can’t believe it,” after the accident. Another resident also contacted 911 after witnessing someone fall from what appeared to be an eighth-floor window, telling the dispatcher that the person seemed unconscious near the pool. Police are still investigating exactly how the accident happened. Following the incident, Rambler Athens reminded residents that windows throughout the complex have safety limiters and warned tenants not to remove or disable them. The apartment community said it is cooperating with authorities while asking residents to respect Kristin and her family’s privacy as she continues her difficult recovery.
