Christa Pike’s Troubling Death Row History Resurfaces After Failed Execution — New Details Emerge

Christa Pike remains hospitalized after surviving two doses of pentobarbital during a failed execution in Tennessee, bringing renewed attention to the case that has kept her on death row for decades. Pike, 50, was scheduled to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than 200 years, but the procedure was halted after prison staff struggled for more than an hour to establish an IV line. Her attorney, Stephen Ferrell, said her condition remained unchanged as of October 4, with Pike still unconscious and dependent on a ventilator. While the medical questions surrounding the failed execution have dominated recent coverage, another part of her history has also resurfaced. Pike was convicted in 1996 for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom prosecutors said she attacked after becoming jealous over her boyfriend. The case involved a violent confrontation in the woods near the Knoxville Job Corps program, and Pike was sentenced to death after her conviction.

Five years after arriving on death row, Pike was accused of another serious attack inside prison. On August 24, 2001, she attempted to strangle fellow inmate Patricia Jones with a shoestring during an evacuation connected to a fire, according to court records. Jones was serving a life sentence for the 1994 murder of 84-year-old Alberta Coker. Pike later maintained that she was trying to protect another inmate, Natasha Cornett, but prosecutors argued that the evidence did not support that explanation. Pike was ultimately convicted of attempted first-degree murder in 2004. That history has drawn fresh public attention as she remains in a Nashville-area hospital following the failed execution. Her attorneys have said medical staff are treating complications after the lethal injection, including severe injuries to her arms caused during attempts to establish intravenous access. Court filings allege that the medication entered tissue rather than properly reaching the bloodstream. As doctors continue treating Pike, questions remain about her prognosis, while the failed execution has also triggered wider scrutiny of Tennessee’s procedures.
