Chad Lowe’s Family Endured Two Heartbreaking Losses — The Memories That Became Precious Forever

At 59, Michael Goessling had long known he was adopted, but he had never stopped wondering about the people whose story began before his own. Raised in St. Louis by Paul and Kay, whom he describes as wonderful parents, he had no reason to doubt the love and security they gave him. Then an unexpected 23andMe notification changed everything: a previously unknown half-brother had taken a DNA test. The results opened a door Goessling had never expected to walk through, eventually leading him to his biological mother and, astonishingly, to his biological father. The name at the center of the discovery was Michael McDonald, the celebrated musician associated with the Doobie Brothers and a five-time Grammy winner. Even more surreal, Goessling had grown up loving the band’s music, often singing along to songs such as “Black Water” and “China Grove,” without realizing there was a deeply personal connection behind that lifelong fascination.

Goessling learned that McDonald and his birth mother had both been just 14 when he was conceived, helping explain why he had been placed for adoption. After reconnecting with his mother, he eventually spoke with his biological father by phone and asked about his work. McDonald explained that he was a musician and had been touring in St. Louis that summer. Then came the question Goessling had been waiting to ask: “Are you Michael McDonald?” The answer confirmed the unbelievable truth. Their first in-person meeting brought an emotional embrace, with both men telling each other they loved one another. McDonald later said he had carried guilt for years but felt relieved knowing his son had been raised in a loving home. He also discovered he was a grandfather, calling the revelation an extraordinary gift. For Goessling, the discovery was more than meeting a famous father—it was finally filling in a missing chapter of his own life.
