California Hiker Brian Seibert Sent a Final Text Before a Tragic Fall — Search Teams Reveal the Difficult Recovery

Brian Seibert, a 53-year-old experienced hiker, reached the summit of California’s 13,000-foot Mount Morgan on Sunday, October 4, 2026, expecting to make his way back down after completing his climb. Hours later, concern grew when he failed to return, turning an outdoor adventure into a desperate search. According to the Mono County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, Seibert sent a text around 7 p.m. saying he was descending the mountain. It would become the last known message before the tragedy unfolded. When he had still not returned by approximately 11:30 p.m., authorities were alerted, and rescuers began working to determine his whereabouts. The search took place in difficult mountainous terrain, where steep slopes and limited access complicated the operation. Teams examined photographs, analyzed cellphone information, and used a search dog near Seibert’s vehicle to help identify possible clues. A Cal Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter also transported rescuers to an elevation of roughly 12,500 feet as efforts intensified to locate the missing climber.

After more than 72 hours of searching, rescuers discovered Seibert near the base of Grand Central Couloir, a prominent gully below the summit. The search team reported that he had suffered a fatal fall from a cliff band while descending. Officials explained that the rugged terrain made an immediate recovery too dangerous, leaving rescuers to plan a safer approach. His body was eventually recovered early Wednesday morning with assistance from a Yosemite National Park helicopter capable of conducting short-haul operations. The Mono County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team later expressed heartfelt condolences to Seibert’s family, friends, and the Eastside community as they mourned his loss. His final message, sent while he was making his way down the mountain, now stands as a painful reminder of how quickly conditions can change during a wilderness outing. The tragedy also highlights the challenges faced by search-and-rescue crews who work in remote, high-altitude environments to bring missing people home. For those who knew Brian, the loss is far more than a mountain accident—it is the heartbreaking absence of a loved one whose final journey ended far from home.
