‘Monsters, Inc.’ Star Who Voiced Boo Turns 30 — Her Life Today Looks Nothing Like Hollywood

It is hard to believe that the little girl who won hearts as Boo in Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. is now 30 years old. Mary Gibbs, whose adorable voice helped make the 2001 animated classic unforgettable, recently marked the milestone by sharing a before-and-after photo that left longtime fans reflecting on how quickly time has passed. The original film became a worldwide hit, earning more than $560 million at the box office, while its popularity continued with the 2013 prequel Monsters University. Gibbs landed the role almost by accident because her father, Rob Gibbs, worked as a storyboard artist on the movie and brought her in when the production needed a young child. She later voiced young Riley in Pixar’s Inside Out, but she eventually chose a different path from a traditional Hollywood career. Today, she works in massage therapy and holistic wellness, while remaining connected to the film that introduced her to audiences around the world.

Gibbs also developed a passion for yoga after being diagnosed with scoliosis as a teenager. In 2012, she underwent spinal fusion surgery involving 10 vertebrae, then focused on rebuilding her strength and mobility. She later explained that she began practicing yoga poses and stretching as soon as she could stand independently, describing her recovery as a combination of a positive mindset and dedicated effort. She even recalled being able to perform a handstand just two months later. Although she stepped away from regular acting work, Gibbs has never completely left Boo behind. Her social media profile features her wearing a Sully onesie, and she has attended fan conventions, where she enjoys meeting people who still cherish the animated film. Meanwhile, actress Mia Wasikowska, known for Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, has also chosen a quieter career path, returning to Australia and focusing on independent projects after finding Hollywood’s demanding lifestyle difficult. Both women demonstrate that stepping away from the spotlight does not mean abandoning a creative passion — sometimes it simply means finding a life that feels more fulfilling.
