Florida Crash Trial Takes a Dramatic Turn — Daniel Waterman’s Final Statement and Family’s Fight for His Daughter

Daniel Waterman, 22, was left fighting for his life after a devastating car crash in Flagler County, Florida, on February 9, 2025. He was riding in a Honda Passport driven by his pregnant girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, 24, when the vehicle struck a tree following an alleged argument. Waterman suffered severe injuries, including spinal fractures and lung damage, and remained in a coma for months. When he regained consciousness, he communicated using a whiteboard and reportedly told investigators that Mumby had deliberately driven into the tree. According to court documents, their argument began after Mumby discovered she was pregnant and Waterman received a text message from a female friend in New York. His mother, Heather Waterman, said the message was an innocent exchange about the Super Bowl. Investigators later examined vehicle data reportedly showing the car reaching approximately 93 miles per hour shortly before impact. Mumby allegedly told authorities she could not remember what caused the crash.

Waterman died on October 8, 2025, after eight months of medical complications, just three days before Mumby gave birth to their daughter. Following his death, prosecutors upgraded the charges against Mumby to vehicular homicide. She had previously faced charges related to reckless driving and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors allege the crash was intentional, while the defense maintains that the circumstances must be evaluated through the legal process. Mumby has pleaded not guilty, and the allegations have not been proven in court. Meanwhile, Waterman’s family is pursuing legal steps to establish paternity and seek custody of the baby girl. His mother says he wanted his daughter to grow up surrounded by his relatives in New York. The family hopes she will one day learn about the father who fought through months of suffering before his life was cut short. As proceedings continue, the evidence surrounding the crash remains central to the case.
