A desperate search across the Mediterranean ended in an extraordinary rescue when a 44-year-old woman was found alive after spending approximately 20 hours in the water. The woman, originally from El Salvador, had reportedly fallen overboard from Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas while the cruise ship was sailing near Greece on October 9, 2026. The vessel had departed Italy on October 4 for a weeklong Mediterranean voyage, but the trip took a frightening turn when the woman went missing. Greek authorities launched an extensive search operation involving multiple vessels and a helicopter, hoping to locate her before it was too late. The breakthrough came when the cargo ship MSC Rossella III, which had joined the search, spotted her in the water on October 10. Remarkably, she was still alive, holding onto an orange life ring as rescuers moved in to help.
Video released by the Hellenic Coast Guard captured the tense moments when the cargo ship’s crew discovered the woman and began bringing her to safety. Crew members threw her a rope and called out to check whether she could respond. She managed to grab the line and pull herself closer to the vessel before the crew brought her aboard. After the rescue, she received first aid and was transported to Katakolo, Greece, where she was taken to a hospital for medical examinations and monitoring. Authorities have since launched a preliminary investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding her fall. Royal Caribbean confirmed that it had immediately initiated search-and-rescue efforts and was cooperating with the authorities. The company also said its Care Team was supporting the woman’s loved ones, while declining to share further personal details. Surviving nearly a full day in the open sea is a remarkable outcome, and the crew’s discovery of the woman brought a hopeful end to a frightening ordeal that could easily have ended very differently.
