Billy Joel Shares Difficult Health Update — Uncertain Future as He Puts Beloved Motorcycles Up for Sale

Billy Joel has opened up about a difficult chapter in his life, revealing that he cannot drive or perform for now as he continues dealing with a rare brain condition. The 77-year-old music legend, best known for “Piano Man,” told The Hollywood Reporter that his neurologist has advised him to avoid performing until further tests determine whether returning to the stage is safe. Joel announced his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in May 2025, explaining that the condition involves a buildup of fluid that can affect the brain. He subsequently underwent surgery to have a shunt placed, which reportedly helped improve his memory and balance. Although he remains hopeful about performing again, the singer acknowledged that he still needs further medical evaluation before making any decisions about his future in music.

Joel also explained why he is parting with a collection that has been close to his heart for years. Because his condition has made driving increasingly uncertain, he decided it was time to sell more than 70 motorcycles rather than continue keeping them. The collection is scheduled to be offered without reserve at the Gooding Christie’s Rétromobile New York auction, taking place at the Javits Center on November 20 and 21. According to TMZ, proceeds from the sale will benefit The Joel Foundation. Joel admitted that both his age and his health influenced the decision, marking a significant change for someone who once enjoyed riding regularly. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his health and his ability to return to live performances, he has reassured fans that he is still here and has not given up on the possibility of performing again.
