The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced one of the largest record updates in its 91-year history, correcting nearly 50 million Social Security number records. According to the agency, the cleanup includes adding 17 million missing death records, updating approximately 25 million records with missing citizenship information, and addressing another 8.5 million records containing inaccurate citizenship details. Officials say these changes will strengthen identity verification, reduce fraud, and help ensure government benefits reach the right people.
Despite the massive update, Social Security recipients do not need to take any action. Existing Social Security numbers remain valid, and monthly benefit payments are expected to continue as usual. The agency also says Social Security numbers are never reassigned after someone passes away. Meanwhile, beneficiaries are looking ahead to a reported 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, which could mean approximately $75 more per month for the average recipient.
