Shamonda Virus Detected in a Human for the First Time — French Patient Dies After Severe Illness

French health authorities announced an unusual medical discovery on October 22, 2026, after the Shamonda virus was detected in a human for the first time ever. The patient, who had a severely weakened immune system, died earlier in October after receiving treatment at Hospices Civils de Lyon, one of France’s major hospital groups. Authorities believe complications affecting the patient’s brain before death were likely connected to the infection. Until now, Shamonda had been known as a virus affecting animals, with no confirmed human cases documented. Investigators are now examining how the infection occurred, bringing together specialists in human health, animal health, and the environment. Despite the seriousness of the case, officials stressed that current evidence has not identified a risk to the general public, describing the incident as exceptional because of the patient’s compromised immune system.

The Shamonda virus was first identified in Nigeria during the 1960s and has since been detected sporadically in animals across parts of Africa and Asia. Tiny biting midges are believed to spread the virus among animals, including cattle. In infected livestock, it can cause fever, digestive difficulties, and abdominal pain, while infections during pregnancy may lead to miscarriages or birth defects in calves. The virus was detected in Europe for the first time in summer 2026, when cases were found on cattle farms in France. The discovery of a human infection has prompted further investigation, but experts have not established how the patient became infected or whether the case signals any broader change in the virus. France’s Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that clinical, biological, and epidemiological investigations remain underway. For now, authorities are urging the public to understand the distinction between this exceptional case and a wider health threat: based on currently available knowledge, no risk to the general population has been identified.
