The news of the passing of Matías and Benjamín Sobarzo deeply affected the community of Villarrica, Chile. The brothers, ages 15 and 13, lost their lives in a tragic accident while helping their mother raise a flag at their home on the evening of September 15, just before Chile’s national celebrations.
While installing a metal flagpole, it accidentally touched a high-voltage power line, causing a strong electric shock. The boys were rushed to nearby medical centers, but sadly, Benjamín passed away first, and Matías died hours later. Their mother was also injured and remains hospitalized.
Their father, Marcelo Sobarzo, expressed his profound grief and disbelief, while teachers at their school remembered the boys as energetic and enthusiastic students.
The Humanities School of Villarrica held a religious ceremony to honor the brothers, with the community coming together to pray and support the family. What was meant to be a moment of celebration turned into a heartbreaking event that left a lasting impact on everyone who knew them.
