Donald Trump and Melania’s second state visit to the UK began with controversy as they reportedly broke royal protocol by arriving late to meet Prince William and Kate Middleton at Windsor Castle. The couple was expected at 12:00 p.m., but their helicopter didn’t land until 12:16 p.m., keeping the royals — including King Charles and Queen Camilla — waiting. King Charles, who is known to dislike delays, was seen watching from inside Victoria House before greeting the Trumps.
Traditionally, when meeting members of the royal family, guests bow, curtsy, and use formal titles such as “Your Majesty.” While these gestures aren’t mandatory, many choose to follow them out of respect. The late arrival was seen as a breach of etiquette, especially given Charles’s history of frustration with tardiness, highlighted during his coronation in 2023.
Despite the rocky start, the day continued with a grand carriage procession through the Windsor estate, featuring 120 horses and over 1,300 members of the British military. The King and Trump rode together, while Queen Camilla and Melania followed in another carriage, and William and Kate rode behind. National anthems for both countries played as they traveled to Windsor Castle.
This visit marks Trump’s second state trip to the UK, following his 2019 visit with the late Queen Elizabeth II. During the stay, he will inspect the guard of honor, attend a state lunch hosted by King Charles, and view US-related artifacts from the Royal Collection. The day will also include a royal salute and a wreath-laying ceremony at Queen Elizabeth’s tomb.
