Kirk, the Turning Point USA co-founder, was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10. On his September 15 episode, Kimmel mocked former President Donald Trump’s reaction to Kirk’s death, joking that Trump was at the “fourth stage of grief:
construction” after Trump quickly shifted a condolence conversation to White House ballroom renovations. ABC announced the indefinite suspension of the show, citing the need for respectful discourse, while Trump celebrated the cancellation on social media. Many Trump supporters called for Kimmel’s firing, but several celebrities have since defended him. Kimmel has not yet commented on ABC’s decision.
