Donald and Melania Trump’s second state visit to the UK began on 17 September with a slight delay, as they arrived late and kept Prince William and Kate Middleton waiting. The couple was scheduled to meet the Prince and Princess of Wales at 12:00 p.m., but Trump’s helicopter only landed at 12:10 p.m. This minor delay could have violated royal protocol, which traditionally expects punctuality and adherence to certain formalities, such as bowing or curtsying when meeting the King.
Once Trump and Melania arrived, they were greeted by William and Kate before meeting King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The King had arrived earlier, and it was noted that he had expressed frustration about waiting during his coronation earlier in the year. Trump, arriving at 12:16 p.m., was already behind schedule. Despite this, the day continued with the couple joining the royal family for a scenic carriage procession through the Windsor estate.
The royal event included a ceremonial welcome, with 120 horses and 1,300 military personnel participating. The Trumps rode in the carriage with King Charles and Queen Camilla, while William and Kate followed behind. The American and British national anthems were played as the carriages moved along the route, and both Trump and Melania engaged in conversations with the royals during the procession.
Throughout their stay, the Trumps will participate in various royal activities, including inspecting the guard of honour, attending a state lunch, and viewing items related to the US in the Royal Collection. Later, Trump will lay a wreath at the tomb of the late Queen Elizabeth II, marking the conclusion of his state visit.
