I Tried to Blend Our Family with Rules and It Blew Up in My Face

After six years of marriage, my 17-year-old stepson, Jake, wants to move in full-time after fighting with his mom. When I gave him a list of house rules—like keeping curfew, cleaning his room weekly, helping with dinner, spending screen-free time with the family, and treating both parents with respect—he exploded. He yelled that our home was a prison, smashed my mug, and stormed off.

My husband accused me of ambushing Jake and is now sleeping in the guest room. Jake won’t even look at me, and I feel like the villain for simply setting boundaries to protect our home, especially since we also have a 9-year-old and a baby.

I wonder if I was too harsh, or if this is just the challenge of blending families and trying to balance structure with compassion.
