Jimmy Kimmel has returned to Jimmy Kimmel Live! after ABC briefly pulled the show following comments he made about Charlie Kirk’s death. During a September 15 broadcast, Kimmel condemned the tragedy but criticized political groups for exploiting it, which sparked backlash.
The controversy escalated when Donald Trump suggested networks critical of him should have their licenses revoked. ABC’s decision to pull the show prompted outrage, including an open letter from the ACLU signed by over 400 celebrities like Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, and Jennifer Aniston.
On September 23, ABC reinstated the show. In his comeback monologue, Kimmel clarified he never intended to make light of the tragedy or blame a specific group. He called government threats to silence comedians “anti-American” and accused Trump of trying to get him fired.
Trump later blasted ABC on Truth Social, claiming Kimmel’s audience was “gone” and hinting at potential legal action.
Despite its return, nearly 25% of ABC affiliate stations, including Sinclair and Nexstar, still refused to air the show. Sinclair demanded Kimmel apologize to Kirk’s family and donate to Turning Point USA, while Nexstar called for “respectful, constructive dialogue.”
The show remains available on Hulu and Disney+.
