Nexstar Media Group announced Tuesday that it will not broadcast Jimmy Kimmel Live! on its ABC affiliates following the late-night host’s disputed remarks about the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The company said its decision was made “pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue.”
The move comes a day after Sinclair Broadcast Group also confirmed that it would preempt Kimmel’s program across its ABC stations, replacing it with local news. Together, Nexstar and Sinclair control dozens of affiliates, meaning Kimmel’s planned return to the airwaves will not reach many of ABC’s largest markets.
Kimmel faced backlash after incorrectly claiming during a broadcast that the suspect in Kirk’s death was linked to Trump supporters. Authorities have since identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the alleged shooter, describing him as having leftist ties. Disney, which owns ABC, suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! following the remarks.
A staff member from Kimmel’s team, speaking anonymously, expressed concern that the host’s show may not return at all, noting that even a public apology may not satisfy critics. Industry observers have speculated that Disney could buy out Kimmel’s contract and replace his program with alternative content. Meanwhile, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has suggested that the agency could review the matter, though he emphasized the need to remain cautious due to potential legal involvement.
