Ethan’s grandmother, Ruth, raised him after his parents died, giving him a childhood filled with love and toy soldiers she carefully collected for him. As Ethan grew older and more successful, he became ashamed of his humble past and distanced himself from her.
For his 25th birthday, Ethan hosted a fancy dinner and lied to Ruth, saying she couldn’t come. But she showed up anyway, soaked from the rain, holding a rusty toolbox as his gift. Embarrassed in front of his friends, Ethan yelled at her and kicked her out. Two days later, she died of a heart attack.
After her funeral, Ethan finally opened the toolbox and discovered it was filled with hand-painted toy soldiers, including rare ones she had saved and bought for him with great sacrifice. A note revealed some were even his late father’s favorites.
Overcome with guilt, Ethan realized the gift symbolized her lifelong love. Though he can never undo his mistake, he now keeps the toolbox as a daily reminder to value love over appearances and never take the people who truly care for granted.
