Kate thought her marriage to Tom was perfect. They lived in her grandmother’s old house and were even talking about starting a family. But when Kate returned home early from a trip, she found Tom in the basement, frantically scrubbing a dark stain with bleach. Nearby, a trash bag held a woman’s wine-stained white dress and one of Tom’s shirts. Tom claimed it was just spilled wine, but his nervous behavior left Kate suspicious.
The next day, Kate unlocked the basement and investigated. She discovered the clothes herself and turned to their neighbor, Mrs. Talbot, who revealed she saw Tom bring a young woman home while Kate was away. When confronted, Tom explained the woman was Claire, a colleague helping him prepare for a promotion. They had spilled wine while working, and he was just cleaning up the mess.
Kate demanded to meet Claire. At dinner, Claire confirmed Tom’s story, explaining that he’d been professional and respectful the entire time. She even said Tom talked about how much he loved Kate and promised to keep their relationship strictly professional moving forward.
Though reassured, Kate warned Tom that her trust wasn’t limitless. If anything suspicious happened again, there would be no second chances. Tom promised nothing like this would ever happen again, leaving Kate hopeful — but still wary.
