A Sunday service turned tragic when a deadly attack struck the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, on September 28, 2025.
Police identified the suspect as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, who died at the scene. Authorities say Sanford rammed a truck into the church, opened fire, then set it on fire. Two victims died from gunfire, and two others were found after the fire was put out. Eight people were injured, one critically.
Investigators are searching Sanford’s home and digital devices but have not determined a motive.
Longtime congregant Paula described chaos as the attack began, saying a loud bang was followed by a door blowing open as members scrambled for safety.
Former President Donald Trump called the incident a “targeted attack on Christians” and confirmed the FBI is leading the investigation.
