Here’s what you need to know about tonsil stones

With the rise of social media, strange and fascinating body-related content has gone viral — from pimple popping to cyst draining and earwax removal. But another topic recently caught attention: tonsil stones.

Tonsil stones are hard white or yellow formations that build up on the tonsils. They’re not usually harmful or painful but can cause symptoms like bad breath, cough, sore throat, or even earache. According to the Mayo Clinic, they form when debris, bacteria, or minerals get trapped in the tiny folds of the tonsils.

Surprisingly, around 3 million Americans deal with tonsil stones each year. The good news is they’re often easy to remove at home. Gargling salt water, coughing, or gently dislodging them with a cotton swab are common methods.

Videos of tonsil stone removals now rack up millions of views online — though they’re not for the squeamish. Still, they’ve sparked curiosity and conversation, showing just how fascinated people are with the odd things our bodies can do.
