I Refuse to Give Any Money to My Late Husband’s (Possible) Affair Baby

The pain of betrayal mixed with the uncertainties of inheritance can feel unbearable. That was the reality for a woman left to raise her 8-year-old alone after her husband’s death nearly three years ago. In that time, she learned enough about who he really was to know that if he were still alive, they wouldn’t still be married.

Six weeks ago, a process server arrived with a court order demanding her husband submit DNA for a child. She handed over his death certificate and thought that was the end of it. Not long after, however, a woman showed up at her door claiming her child was her late husband’s. She wasn’t sure if it was true and didn’t much care—the timing would have been right before his death. When the woman demanded “her half” of his estate, she told her there was no estate and that half of nothing was nothing.

What she didn’t say was that some assets had passed directly to her outside of probate. One of them was a rental property his parents had given them, deeded jointly with rights of survivorship. That meant it became hers when he died. She sold it and set aside the money for her own child’s college. Legally, she had already checked with an attorney and was in the clear. While she felt some sympathy for the other child, her responsibility was to her own.

Friends and strangers reassured her that she wasn’t in the wrong. They reminded her that without proof of paternity, she owed nothing, that the property was legally hers, and that her child’s future had to come first. Some even suggested the entire situation might have been a scam. In the end, while the moral questions may linger, the choice reflected a simple truth: moving forward often requires hard, deeply personal decisions.
