Sarah (24) lives rent-free at her mom’s place in South Carolina with her fiancé, Nate (26), who keeps losing jobs because he can’t wake up on time. After Nate confides in Sarah’s mom—who lives in rural Alaska—Mom invites them both to move in, work, and get on their feet where wages are better and costs are low. Sarah starts packing and takes a short goodbye trip with friends.
When she returns, she finds her suitcase open with her documents, cash, and engagement ring inside—and a one-way ticket to Alaska in Nate’s name. He admits he plans to go ahead “to set things up,” claiming Sarah should follow later. Worse, he’s sold her car to fund the ticket, saying he’ll pay her back.
Sarah calls her mom, who’s furious and clarifies the offer was for them to move together or not at all. The staged “surprise” reveals a pattern: Nate’s promises without action, alarms ignored, and decisions made over Sarah’s head.
Choosing herself, Sarah refuses to follow him. She moves her things to a friend’s place, explores legal and financial options regarding the car, and tells Nate he needs to learn to stand on his own two feet—starting with waking up on time.
